This is a strictly guided route and booking is essential. The route is suitable for all year driving; from end July to mid September the flowers can be spectacular. Various self-catering guest house accommodation options are available as well as camping sites. You’ll find shops, restaurants, pubs and fuel in Kleinzee and Koingnaas. The guided Shipwreck 4×4 Trail is another popular choice in the area. Swimming, surfing, beach walking, birding, surf angling and golf will keep you active in and around Kleinzee and Koingnaas.
The Diamond Coast, stretching northwards from the Olifants River to Alexander Bay and its historically impenetrable security has an aura of mystery and magic that still prevails. The Strandveld trail traverses a privately-owned and otherwise inaccessible section of the Diamond Coast between Koingnaas and Kleinzee. This stretch of coastline has been strictly protected by virtue of diamond prospecting and mining rights. The natural habitat and all the archaeological and fossil treasures have remained virtually untouched.
The Strandveld 4×4 Trail meanders through a 30 000ha privately-owned game park. Ostrich, gemsbok, springbok and smaller antelope are common sights along the route as well as a huge variety of plants. The trail follows a sometimes nearly invisible route through two dune systems that cover approximately 1 200ha and provide spectacular dune riding opportunities. As the Strandveld Dune Field comprises dynamic mobile dunes with almost no fixed vegetation there is only a very small risk of harming any form of fauna or flora.
This is fantastic 4×4 fun for the entire family and definitely not without a challenge for both novices and experienced drivers. Tours depart at 09h00 from a pre-arranged starting point. A minimum of eight people (16 years and older) are required to reserve a tour. Applications for security clearances must be submitted at least 48 hours prior to arrival and an ID document or passport is obligatory.
